Dear Members,
The NHL hockey season starts next week, and that
means the Alberta Branch Hockey Pool is ready for another
year!
The Hockey Pool is open to all members of the Alberta
Branch – and best of all, it
is FREE! All you have to do is select a team of NHL players based on
the following structure:
- TWO Left Wingers.
Each Left Winger on your team will be awarded one point for each
goal they score and one point for each assist they are awarded.
- TWO Centres. Each
Centre on your team will be awarded one point for each goal they
score and one point for each assist they are awarded.
- TWO Right Wingers.
Each Right Winger on your team will be awarded one point for each
goal they score and one point for each assist they are awarded.
- FOUR Defensemen.
Each Defenseman on your team will be awarded TWO points for each
goal they score and one point for each assist they are awarded. So
picking a Defenseman that scores a few goals can be very helpful to
your pool – even if he scores
goals while playing as a Forward!
- TWO Goaltenders.
Each Goaltender on your team will be awarded FOUR points for each
goal they score and TWO points for each assist they are awarded.
Even more important, they receive TWO points for each Win they are
awarded and an extra TWO points for every shutout they are awarded;
your Goaltenders will even receive one point for each Overtime loss
or Shootout loss. Picking the right Goaltender can vault you to the
top of the standings, so choose wisely!
- ONE NHL Team. You
will receive TWO points for each win and ONE point for any Overtime
loss or Shootout loss for the team that you select. You can pick
your favorite team if you want, or you can pick someone other than
the Flames and get a few extra points.
Some skaters may play different positions, so we will
use NHL.com (www.nhl.com)
to identify a player’s specific position. In fact, you can use
NHL.com to help select your team. Go to
www.nhl.com/ice/playerstats.htm#?navid=nav-sts-indiv
and you will be able to generate lists
of the top scorers at each position from the 2010
– 2011 NHL season.
There is really no skill required to participate
in the Branch Hockey Pool –
as the list of previous winners (Scott Budgell, Jason MacDonald,
etc.) clearly demonstrates. After a brief review of last year’s
stats you should have a great shot at the prizes! Oh, did I forget
to mention that there are prizes for the Top Three Spots? Yep, the
member with the most points in the Pool at the end of the regular
season will receive $50, second place will receive $30 and third
place will receive $20. After twelve years of frustration, I’m SURE
I might get in the money this year!
We will maintain the Alberta Branch Hockey Pool on
the OfficePools.com website (www.officepools.com).
Once you submit your team you will be able to access our Pool site
and follow your team and the overall standings whenever you want.
And you will be able to interact with your fellow Poolies through a
Trash Talk feature on the web site. It’s always enjoyable to poke
fun at the Calgary Flames fans!
All you have to do is submit your team to me by email
at
drichen@magtech.ca or
dan.richen@albertahealthservices.ca.
The closing date for team
submissions will be Friday, October 21 (yep, more than
ten days into the actual NHL season). So give it a shot and submit
your team list by October 21.
